| ERISA requires plan sponsors to exercise prudence and due diligence in the selection and monitoring of retirement plan providers. With so many established providers in the marketplace, fulfilling this duty is a daunting task for anyone who does not specialize in the retirement plan industry. Compounding the problem are industry restrictions that limit the ability or desire of many brokers or advisors to present the full spectrum of providers in an unbiased manner. Plan sponsors end up making a decision based upon a limited menu and do not know what they own, why they own it or what they are paying for it.
